Yes, I cheated on Mars after five faithful years, but she suggested I do it...so it doesn't feel as bad. Fabrizio was my Italian hairdresser and I was willing to just see what happened (knowing Mars could fix it), but luckily his other client at the time, who I thought was Italian, turned out to be from Portland living in Treviso for many, many years...so she was able to help with some of the more technical hair conversation. Rachel and Julia met me there and we snuck in Rachel for a 'fringe' trim. Fabrizio and I discovered that we could communicate much better in Spanish than in English or Italian. My new plan, with the realization that I probably won't be a fluent Italian speaker in this life, is to get much, much better at spoken Spanish. My new found commitment to really speaking Spanish corresponds nicely with Julia's high school Spanish career, which is just beginning.
After the haircuts, we wandered through some 'new' streets and found a nice spot for lunch - on a corner we cross almost every day but had never approached from that direction so thought it was a brand new find! The waiter was super interested in making sure we were seeing all the area had to offer and brought us picture books to look at so we wouldn't miss anything. Seeing the books solidified my plans for tomorrow, so that was super helpful. As I had found my hairdresser by asking someone who had nice hair where I should get it cut, I decided to try again with a woman wearing a dress I liked. It would have been less embarrassing if she had continued to walk on after telling me where to buy the dress, but instead she sat down at the table next to us for lunch. That table was definitely full of the real locals having their lunch - they knew almost everyone who passed by. Reminded me of being in South Pas where you are always likely to see someone you know.
On the way home, we went into our gelato shop to see what other sorts of granite we could order...I got one with fresh squeezed orange juice, Julia got the one with lemon juice, and Rachel ordered one made with blended fresh pineapple and ice. It is twice as much money as a small gelato but so incredibly refreshing and virtuous - the perfect dessert. While wandering earlier we did find that same gelato company that we tried in Vicenza - the one with the coconut, hazelnut, white chocolate - is right next to where I got my haircut. Not virtuous but so delicious!
This afternoon has been spent playing Nancy Drew computer games and catching up on this blog! I can't fall so far behind again - it makes my totally not stressful life a little too stressful! Jim is home from a meeting in Bologna and we are off to go try a restaurant he has been wanting to try - another pizza place! Then home for the continuation of the Game Challenge!
P.S. Now home from dinner - pizza was delicious, so was the fancy gelato place, and so was the fresh pineapple granite. I forgot to say that somewhere during the Nancy Drew blogging time Julia went down and got a peach granite to see what that was like. So that makes five so far today!
